BS 6387 Fire Protection Standard
BS6387 standard fire-resistant cable is a type of fire-resistant cable specifically designed to operate and maintain its function under extreme conditions. This type of cable has been tested and can withstand fire, water, and mechanical stress, making it suitable for various applications that require high safety and reliability. Therefore, BS6387 cables are commonly used in construction, infrastructure, transportation, and other industries that are crucial to safety. For those looking for cables that can withstand extreme conditions and operate reliably, this type of cable may be the solution they are pursuing. Its design aims to resist fire, water, and mechanical stress, making it an ideal choice for safety critical applications. The fire resistance or circuit integrity of fire-resistant cables refers to the ability of the cable to continuously supply power for a period of time without short circuit in the event of fire. The use of fire-resistant cables is closely related to the use of life-saving or emergency circuits that affect safety in the event of a fire. In the case where ordinary cables cannot replace fire-resistant cables, the insulation layer cannot withstand a sufficiently long high-temperature flame and cannot provide power when exposed to fire. Therefore, for applications that require high safety and reliability, fire-resistant cables are essential.
In order to evaluate the fire resistance performance, electrical installation standards require the use of testing methods in accordance with BS6387 or IEC60331. Normally, it is recommended to refer to BS6387 instead of IEC 60331, as it includes more comprehensive sub tests for evaluating fire resistance performance. According to the fire resistance test of BS6387, it can be divided into the following three sub tests:
1. The separate testing standards for fire resistance are divided based on the level of flame temperature and testing time. This includes test levels using the letters A, B, and C, corresponding to 3 hours at 650 ° C, 3 hours at 750 ° C, and 3 hours at 950 ° C. In addition, there is a test level with the letter S symbol, corresponding to 20 minutes at 950 ° C.
The standard for water and fire resistance testing is to burn the wire at flame temperature for 15 minutes, then spray water and burn it again at 650 ° C for 15 minutes.
3. The standard for fire resistance mechanical impact test is divided based on the level of flame temperature and test time. Specifically, the impact levels using the letters X, Y, and Z correspond to 15 minutes of impact at 650 ° C, 15 minutes of impact at 750 ° C, and 15 minutes of impact at 950 ° C. In these three sub tests, the wires will be connected to the lamp and fuse or circuit breaker to check the integrity of the circuit and provide a voltage equal to the rated voltage of the wires. This process will use open flames to perform the specified operations.
The above is the testing method required by electrical installation standards to evaluate fire resistance performance. These three sub tests cover flame testing, water and fire resistance testing, and fire mechanical impact testing under different temperature and time conditions. During these tests, wires are connected to lamps, fuses, or circuit breakers to check the integrity of the circuit and provide rated voltage. This process requires the use of open flames for specified operations.
BS6387 cables are mainly characterized by their fire resistance and water resistance. In practical applications, this type of cable can maintain its ability to transmit signals and power in the event of a fire, thus playing an important role in environments where fire safety is crucial, such as fire detection and alarm systems for buildings and infrastructure. In addition, the cable also has excellent waterproof performance, which can maintain its function in submerged environments, which is crucial in many applications. In addition, BS6387 cables also have excellent mechanical strength. It can withstand various physical stresses without fracture or performance degradation, thus performing excellently in applications that may be exposed to vibration, impact, or bending. Finally, this type of cable also has the ability to resist ultraviolet radiation. Over time, ultraviolet radiation can have an impact on the sheath material, leading to a decrease in performance. But BS6387 cable has been tested and can maintain its function for a long time under ultraviolet radiation. Because of these characteristics, BS6387 cables are widely used in various industries and environments. BS6387 cables have attracted much attention due to their fire resistance and water resistance. After testing, this type of cable can withstand flames for up to three hours in the event of a fire, while also maintaining the ability to transmit signals and power, making it an ideal choice for fire safety critical applications. In addition, the cable also has moisture-proof performance, which can maintain its function in humid or humid environments, which is crucial for many applications. In addition to fire and waterproofing, BS6387 cables also have excellent mechanical properties. It can withstand various physical stresses without fracture or performance degradation, making it suitable for environments that require exposure to vibration, impact, or bending. Finally, this type of cable also has the ability to resist ultraviolet radiation. Therefore, BS6387 cables have been widely used in various industries and environments, including high-rise buildings, hospitals, schools, and other fire safety critical facilities.
